I read a book earlier this year Not Another Apple for the Teacher. I wanted to share a few of the quotes and tidbits that I felt resonated with the class.

Socrates' most famous student was Plato. Plato's most famous student was Aristotle. Aristotle's most famous was Alexander the Great, who used all of that accumulated knowledge to go on a military rampage, conquering pretty much all of the known world.
The last time that American education went through a test-'em-to-death fad was early in the twentieth century. From that testing mania we got IQ tests and the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Test...but we also got tests that purported to measure a child's intelligence and learning by the size and shape of the student's head.
The word school derives from the Greek skhole, which means "leisure." It came from a time when only the children of the idle rich had time to devote to study.
The Primer used every opportunity to teach a grim sort of religion. For example, this alphabet less:
